From the mind of Joel Gibb, currently one of the most versatile Canadian artists, The Hidden Cameras is a project that came to light in Toronto, in 2011. Through symphonic indie pop and theatrical performances, The Hidden Cameras exalt freedom in all its spectrum, giving voice to queer politics and celebrating unapologetic sexuality. Their last album, Home On Native Land (2016), was written and recorded over the course of 10 years by Gibb and an assembly of artists/friends, such as Rufus Wainwright, Feist, Neil Tennant, Bahamas, Ron Sexsmith and Mary Margaret O’Hara. Together, they formed a chorus of provocative and subversive voices that revisits Canada’s history, not only on a physical level but also delving into the philosophic aspect of it, exploring the heritage of Canadian folk music and questioning the nation’s very identity through melodic sonorities that get some of their influence from country music, almost transforming Gibb into a wandering cowboy who is regaling the listener with stories of his own life while he makes his way through the album’s tracks.
