The genealogical lineage of the art of Drag in the Azores is a line that is barely legible and very difficult to trace: Tia Maria do Nordeste is an absent relative, the subversion of gender roles is often a carnivalesque joke. That is why Valdemar Creator (from somewhere along Ribeira Grande, during the day)/Valley Dation (from somewhere along Trumps, at night) has been throwing doors open and setting up carpets all over this island, when it comes to Drag Shows. In 2022, Valley Dation deconstructed the concept of what being a princess is, to the sound of Paco Piri-Piri, at Estúdio 13, in a Mini Tremor performance. Valdemar tells us how he wrote “A Valley das Sete Cidades”:
«I remember, for example, one of the children whispering to me, “I know this is a wig and that you are a boy.” as if he had just discovered gunpowder. I also remember that there was a little girl dazzled by my character and when the show ended and I was already without a wig, thinking everyone had already left, I turned back, and I saw the girl gaping at me (I wanted to deconstruct gender roles and ended up deconstructing it a little too much). There was even a kid that during the show had decided to pick on me — everything I asked he answer with a “no” or said that he didn't like it — but then at the end of the show he came to give me a hug. The type of drag I do on the island is always combined with comedy. You have to know how to do things. It was a cheerful and fun educational thing.»
