Between the 16th and the 22nd of November, Pico Island will host a new episode of Terra Incógnita, a project that continues its path of artistic residencies dedicated to sound and performative creation in dialogue with the Azorean natural landscape. In this edition, artists Luís Pestana and André Medeiros will be in residence on the island, exploring Pico’s landscape and its multiple sensory, emotional, and symbolic dimensions.
On 19 November at 6:00 p.m., a public conversation with the artists will take place at the Museu dos Baleeiros auditorium, in Lajes do Pico, moderated by Germana Eiriz. This open event will invite the public to share in the artists’ processes, ideas, and experiences, reflecting on artistic creation and the act of listening to the territory.
The final presentation of the residency will take place on 22 November 2025 at 10:00 a.m. The proposal invites participants to walk a trail on the island accompanied by a site-specific soundtrack and a live performance at its conclusion. Participation is free, subject to prior registration through this form.
Luís Pestana is a Portuguese composer and sound artist whose work explores the relationship between technology, memory, and imagination, moving between the sacred and the profane, the digital and the organic. Author of Rosa Pano(Orange Milk Records), Pestana creates soundscapes that evoke the human within the machine, blending tradition and experimentation in a constant search for a sonic utopia — a future inhabited by memory.
André Baptista Medeiros, born in São Mateus on Pico Island, is a musician and composer specializing in keyboard instruments. Trained in piano and harpsichord at the Escola Profissional de Artes da Covilhã (EPABI), his career bridges classical music, rock, jazz, and popular traditions. Balancing performance and teaching, Medeiros stands out for his versatility and deep connection to Pico’s artistic and musical community, participating in numerous local and regional projects.
Terra Incógnita proposes new ways of experiencing and reinterpreting the Azorean natural territory, bringing together art, ecology, and community. Through residencies, performances, and public encounters, the project fosters attentive listening to the landscape and promotes dialogue between artistic practice and environmental awareness. This new session on Pico reinforces Terra Incógnita’s commitment to valuing the islands’ sonic and cultural diversity, creating spaces for encounter, experimentation, and discovery.
