Between 7 and 13 December 2025, the island of São Miguel will host a new edition of Terra Incógnita, a project that continues to develop its trajectory of artistic residencies dedicated to sound, performative, and visual creation in dialogue with the Azorean natural landscape. In this edition, artists Xavier Paes and Inês Tartaruga Água, in collaboration with Inês Ribeiro, will be in residence on the island, exploring the landscape of São Miguel through its sensory, material, and symbolic dimensions.
On 10 December, at 6:30 p.m., a public conversation with the artists will take place at Rua Comandante Jaime de Sousa, 23, a moment open to all and dedicated to sharing processes, ideas, and experiences related to artistic creation, sensory experimentation, and attentive listening to the territory.
The final presentation of the residency will take place on 13 December 2025, at 10:00 a.m. The proposal involves a site-specific route conceived for the occasion, in which the public will experience a sound and visual composition developed throughout the residency, culminating in a performative action. Participation is free, upon prior registration through this form.
Xavier Paes and Inês Tartaruga Água are artists whose practice unfolds at the intersections of sound, performance, and image. They have collaborated regularly since 2015, exploring a serendipity of experimental character in relation to the materials and spaces they inhabit. Their work moves through spectrums and ethereal landscapes, investigating acoustic phenomena and sonic subduction zones, where their individual universes merge into a singular artistic trajectory. Their projects have been presented in renowned institutions such as STUK Kunstencentrum, Villa Arson, MIT – Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Café Oto, Centro Botín, and Galeria Municipal do Porto.
Inês Ribeiro (Leiria, 1981) is a visual artist and ceramicist. She completed her degree in Fine Arts – Sculpture at ESAD.CR and pursued studies at Guzel Sanatlar Facultesi – Akdeniz Universitesi, in Turkey, under the Erasmus programme. In 2007 she joined Cencal, where she completed the Creative Ceramics Course with an internship in São Pedro do Corval, under the guidance of Master Joaquim Tavares. Since 2008 she has been active as an art teacher across various areas of the visual arts, while maintaining her authorial work. She settled in São Miguel in 2009, continuing her artistic projects and deepening her ceramic practice. She was awarded the LabJovem 2015 First Prize in Ceramic Design with Ceramic Postcard. In 2019 she opened Matéria 47 Ceramics Studio in Ponta Delgada, a space where she continues her artistic production and the transmission of ancestral ceramic knowledge through classes and workshops. For the artist, art is a medium for shifting consciousness, and the creative process is an intimate exercise in understanding the relationship between the creator and the world around them.
Terra Incógnita proposes new ways of experiencing and reinterpreting the Azorean natural territory, bringing together art, ecology, and community. Through residencies, public presentations, and encounters, the project encourages attentive listening to the landscape and fosters dialogue between artistic practice and environmental awareness. This new edition in São Miguel reinforces Terra Incógnita’s commitment to the sensory, sonic, and cultural diversity of the islands, creating spaces for encounter, experimentation, and discovery.
